Korea Autumn Foliage — When to Go & the 7 Best Spots

Korea's autumn foliage season is one of the country's two great natural spectacles — six weeks of blazing reds, deep oranges, and golden yellows transforming the country's mountains, ancient palaces, and island landscapes from mid-October through late November. This guide covers exact peak timing by region, the seven best Korea autumn foliage destinations, and how to plan your fall trip efficiently.

Korea Autumn Foliage — When to Go & the 7 Best Spots
Peak: mid-Oct to mid-Nov
Mountains peak 2–3 wks earlier than valleys
Temps: 5–17°C (41–63°F)
Book accommodation early October
Foliage Timing Varies by Elevation & Region Autumn foliage in Korea follows a predictable but weather-dependent pattern: high mountain summits (Seoraksan, Hallasan) peak earliest (late September–early October), followed by lower mountain slopes (mid-October), and finally urban parks and valleys (late October–mid November). A single trip can chase colour by moving from north/high altitude to south/low altitude over 1–2 weeks. Annual foliage forecast maps are published from early September by private weather companies such as Kweather — check their releases or Korean news sites for the current year's predictions.

The 7 Best Korea Autumn Foliage Destinations

1
Most Spectacular · Seoraksan National Park
Seoraksan National Park 설악산국립공원
강원도 속초시 설악산로 1091 · Express bus from Seoul to Sokcho (~2.5 hrs), then local bus 7 or 7-1 · Peak: early–mid October

Seoraksan (설악산, "Snow Peak Mountain") is universally considered Korea's finest autumn foliage mountain — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve whose dramatic granite peaks and dense mixed forests turn into an extraordinary palette of crimson, amber, and gold that lasts two full weeks. The mountain's multiple trails offer different vantage points: the Biryong Falls trail (비룡폭포) through a river gorge gives intimate close-up views of maple branches in colour; the Ulsanbawi Rock trail (울산바위) climbs above the treeline for panoramic views of the foliage canopy spreading across the mountain basin; and the Gwongeumseong cable car (권금성 케이블카) offers aerial colour views without strenuous hiking.

Cable car: ₩14,000 round trip; queues can be 60–90 minutes on weekends during peak colour. National park entry is now free (the temple cultural property fee was abolished in May 2023). Accommodation in Sokcho (속초) books out quickly in early–mid October — reserve at least 6–8 weeks ahead. The Seoraksan Information Centre posts daily foliage status on their website and social media.
2
Best Maples · Naejangsan National Park
Naejangsan National Park 내장산국립공원
전북 정읍시 내장산로 936 · KTX to Jeongeup station then shuttle bus (~2 hrs from Seoul) · Peak: late Oct – early Nov

Naejangsan (내장산, "Mountain of Inner Treasure") holds a special place in Korean foliage culture — it is widely considered to produce the most intense and varied maple colour in the entire country. The park is home to 11 different native maple species, including the extremely rare 단풍나무 variants whose leaves turn a saturated crimson-red that photographers travel from across Asia to capture. The entrance valley (내장사 입구) is lined with maple trees forming a 108-step tunnel path to Naejangsa Temple (내장사) — this corridor, at peak colour, is one of the most photographed scenes in Korea. A cable car ascends to the ridge above for panoramic colour views.

Naejangsan is a day-trip from Jeonju (전주, 30 min by bus) or an overnight from Seoul. The park is most crowded on the last two weekends of October and first weekend of November — if possible, visit on a weekday. Entry: ₩3,000. The cable car (₩7,000 round trip) operates seasonally and sells out on peak days — buy tickets at the gate early.
3
Seoul's Best Mountain · Bukhansan National Park
Bukhansan National Park 북한산국립공원
서울 은평구 진관동 · Subway Line 3, Gupabal station (Exit 1) or Line 4, Suyu station (Exit 1) · Peak: mid–late October

Bukhansan (북한산, "Mountain North of the Han River") is the most-visited national park in the world by visitor density — a 77 km² park sitting entirely within the Seoul metropolitan area, accessible by subway. In autumn, the mountain's mixed deciduous forest (maple, oak, chestnut) turns spectacular shades of red, orange, and yellow against the backdrop of Bukhansan's distinctive exposed granite peaks. The Dobongsan (도봉산) section in the northeast offers equally dramatic scenery with slightly lower visitor numbers. The Ui-Sinseol Greenway Forest Road (북한산 우이령길) is a gently graded autumn trail through mature maple forest.

Bukhansan is free to enter and accessible from multiple subway stations. The park has dozens of trails ranging from gentle valley walks (1–2 hrs) to full summit climbs (4–6 hrs). The most colourful accessible areas are Jingwan valley (진관계곡) near Gupabal station and Bukhansanseong valley (북한산성계곡), reached by bus 704 from Gupabal station. Bring hiking shoes — trails are rocky.
4
Island Foliage · Nami Island
Nami Island 남이섬
강원도 춘천시 남산면 · ITX-Cheongchun train from Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong, then shuttle bus + ferry (~1.5 hrs from Seoul) · Peak: late October – early November

Nami Island (남이섬) is a small half-moon-shaped river island in the North Han River in Gangwon Province, famous worldwide after the Korean drama Winter Sonata (2002) was filmed here. In autumn, the island's signature avenues — the ginkgo tree road (은행나무길), the metasequoia avenue (메타세쿼이아길), and the chestnut forest paths — turn golden, amber, and deep rust. The island has operated as a cultural arts venue since 2001 and hosts rotating public art installations year-round. The combination of foliage colours, outdoor sculpture, and the peaceful river setting makes Nami Island one of Korea's most pleasant fall destinations.

Ferry ticket to the island: ₩16,000 round trip (includes island entry). The island is compact — a full circuit takes 1.5–2 hours. It's especially beautiful in the morning, before the mid-day tour buses arrive. The nearby Petite France (쁘띠프랑스) and Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) can be combined on the same day trip from Seoul.
5
Historic Setting · Gyeongju Namsan
Gyeongju Namsan Mountain 경주 남산
경주시 남산동 · Taxi from Gyeongju station or bus (Nam Mountain west trailhead near Samneung area) · Peak: late October – early November

Gyeongju Namsan (경주 남산, "South Mountain") is a low mountain ridge (468 m) riddled with Silla-era Buddhist carvings, stone pagodas, and royal tomb sites hidden among its forested slopes — often called an "open-air museum." In autumn, the maple and oak forest turns vivid red and orange around the ancient stone Buddha figures carved directly into the granite cliff faces, creating one of Korea's most uniquely atmospheric hiking experiences. Over 100 Buddhist relics are scattered along Namsan's trails, many discovered decades ago and still standing in their original positions. This is a serene, culturally immersive alternative to the crowded national parks.

Namsan has multiple trail systems — the Samneung valley (삼릉계곡) course (3–4 hrs) passes the highest concentration of Buddhist carvings through beautiful forest. Entry is free. A local Gyeongju tour guide can be hired at the tourist information centre near Gyeongju station for a narrated Namsan heritage hike (₩30,000–50,000/group).
6
Long Season · Jirisan National Park
Jirisan National Park 지리산국립공원
경남 산청군 / 전남 구례군 · Intercity bus to Gurye (구례) or Ssanggyesa entrance · Peak: late Oct – mid Nov

Jirisan (지리산, "Mountain of the Wise") is Korea's largest mainland national park and the country's most botanically diverse mountain — a multi-peak massif straddling South Gyeongsang, North Jeolla, and South Jeolla provinces. Its foliage season is the longest of any Korean mountain (3+ weeks) due to its broad north-south and elevation range. The approach to Ssanggyesa Temple (쌍계사) through Hwagae Marketplace (화개장터) along a 10 km riverside road flanked by ancient maples is one of Korea's most celebrated autumn drives/walks. The Piagol Valley (피아골계곡) is particularly renowned for its saturated crimson maple colour.

Jirisan is a 3+ hour journey from Seoul — best as a 2-night base in Gurye (구례) or Namwon (남원). The Ssanggyesa–Piagol Valley day hike (6 hrs round trip) is the classic autumn route. The park has excellent hut systems (산장) for multi-day ridge traverse hikes, but these require advance reservation from spring.
7
Urban Foliage · Seoul Ginkgo Streets
Seoul Ginkgo Streets — Changdeokgung & Garosu-gil 은행나무 단풍길
Various Seoul locations · Subway accessible · Peak: late October – mid November

Seoul's urban autumn foliage is dominated by the ginkgo tree (은행나무) — hundreds of mature specimens line the major boulevards, turning a brilliant uniform gold in October and November. The most beautiful ginkgo streets include: Changdeokgung Palace approach road (창덕궁 돈화문로) in Jongno — ancient palace walls flanked by golden trees; Garosu-gil (가로수길) in Gangnam — the city's most fashionable tree-lined boulevard in deep gold; and Gyeonghuigung Palace promenade (경희궁) near Gwanghwamun. The grounds of Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁) and Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) also have spectacular autumn colour in their courtyard trees.

Ginkgo trees produce a strong odour from their fruit in October — the smell is pungent but the trees are removed to indoor locations soon after fruit falls. Most of the best urban ginkgo viewing is concentrated in the 4th and 5th weeks of October. Changdeokgung's Secret Garden (후원) holds special extended-hours autumn foliage tours — tickets are released online and sell out within days of becoming available.

Planning Tips for Korea Autumn Foliage

Getting Around During Foliage Season Weekend trains and buses to Seoraksan, Naejangsan, and Nami Island fill up on peak weekends (mid-October through early November). Book intercity buses on kobus.co.kr or bustago.co.kr at least a week ahead. KTX trains to Jeongeup (for Naejangsan) and Gapyeong (for Nami Island) can be booked on letskorail.com. For national parks, visiting on weekdays reduces both queues and accommodation pressure significantly.
Photography tip: the best foliage light in Korea is in the 2 hours after sunrise (warm low light, no crowds) and the 90 minutes before sunset. Overcast days with soft diffuse light produce more saturated colours in photos than harsh midday sun. For Naejangsan's famous tunnel of maple trees, morning side-light at 8–9 AM is optimal.
