Korea Cherry Blossom Season — When to Go & Where to See the Best Blooms

Korea's cherry blossom season is one of the most spectacular natural events in East Asia — two weeks of pink and white blossoms transforming the country's streets, parks, and ancient palaces into landscapes of extraordinary beauty. This guide covers exact bloom timing by city, the seven best blossom destinations from the famous to the hidden, and practical tips for navigating the crowds.

Korea Cherry Blossom Season — When to Go & Where to See the Best Blooms
Peak: late March – mid April
Full bloom lasts ~7–10 days
Book accommodation 3+ months ahead
Temps: 10–18°C (50–64°F)
Cherry Blossom Timing Varies Every Year Cherry blossom peak dates shift by 1–2 weeks depending on winter temperatures. Warmer winters push blooms earlier (sometimes mid-March in Jeju); cold springs delay them into mid-April. Note that the Korea Meteorological Administration no longer issues official blossom forecasts — private weather companies such as Kweather publish the widely used forecasts each February–March. Follow those releases or Korean news sites for the current year's dates. The dates in this guide reflect typical averages based on historical records — always verify the current year's forecast before booking non-refundable accommodation.

The 7 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Korea

1
Most Famous · Jinhae, South Gyeongsang
Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival 진해 군항제
창원시 진해구 · KTX to Changwon then bus/taxi to Jinhae (2.5 hrs from Seoul) · Festival: late March–early April (2026: Mar 27–Apr 5)

Jinhae (진해) is universally considered the most spectacular cherry blossom destination in Korea — and arguably one of the most beautiful in all of Asia. A former Japanese naval base town, Jinhae's streets, riverbanks, and railway lines were planted with tens of thousands of King Cherry trees (왕벚나무) whose blossoms form unbroken tunnels of white and pink overhead. The annual Gunhangje Festival (군항제) draws up to 2 million visitors over 10 days. The most photographed spot is Yeojwacheon Stream (여좌천), where the blossoms arch over the water creating a perfect reflection, and Jinhae Rotary (진해 로터리) where trees radiate outward from a central statue.

Jinhae becomes extraordinarily crowded during the festival — accommodation within the town sells out a year in advance. Most visitors day-trip from Busan (1.5 hrs by bus) or from Changwon. Go on a weekday and arrive before 9 AM to see Yeojwacheon Stream before crowds arrive. The Gyeonghwa Station (경화역) railway cherry blossom tunnel, where trains pass through a corridor of blossoms, requires arriving early — the tracks are technically active.
2
Best in Seoul · Yeouido, Seoul
Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival 영등포 여의도 봄꽃축제
영등포구 여의대로 · Subway Line 5/9, Yeouinaru station (Exit 2) or Yeouido station · Festival: early April

Yeouido (여의도) is Seoul's financial district and parliament island — and during cherry blossom season, it transforms into the city's most celebrated blossom park. The 1.7 km stretch of Yeouiseo-ro (여의서로) along the Han River is planted with around 1,800 mature King Cherry trees that form a tunnel of blossoms rivalling Jinhae in sheer density. The Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival (영등포 여의도 봄꽃축제) — the official city festival, held in early April — runs alongside the bloom with food stalls, live performances, and illuminated night events that keep the park alive until 11 PM.

Weekdays before 10 AM or after 7 PM (for the lit night blooms) are the least crowded. The Han River Banpo area and the path along Yeouido Hangang Park are also excellent secondary spots that are less packed. The Yeouido district near the National Assembly building has particularly old and large trees with wide canopies.
3
Most Historic · Changgyeonggung Palace, Seoul
Changgyeonggung Palace Cherry Blossoms 창경궁 벚꽃
종로구 창경궁로 185 · Subway Line 4, Hyehwa station (Exit 1) · Open until 9 PM during blossom season

Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁) — a UNESCO-adjacent Joseon royal palace built in 1484 — hosts some of Seoul's most romantically beautiful cherry blossom viewing. During bloom season the palace grounds open for extended evening hours, and the blossoms over the ancient stone walls and traditional roof lines create an atmosphere of extraordinary historic beauty. (The National Palace Museum of Korea, incidentally, sits beside Gyeongbokgung — not here.) The combination of 500-year-old palace architecture and white blossom canopies is unique to Seoul and not replicated anywhere else in Korea. Fewer visitors come here than to Yeouido, making it one of the more peaceful blossom experiences in the city.

Evening visits (after 6 PM) during extended spring hours are exceptional — the lit palace buildings against the darkening sky and white petals are unforgettable. Entry: ₩1,000 (free with Gyeongbokgung combination ticket). The adjacent Changdeokgung Secret Garden (창덕궁 후원) also has magnificent spring blooms and is worth combining.
4
Urban Classic · Seokchon Lake, Seoul
Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossoms 석촌호수 벚꽃
송파구 잠실로 · Subway Line 2/8, Jamsil station (Exit 3) · Free, open 24 hours

Seokchon Lake (석촌호수) in Songpa-gu is one of Seoul's most visually striking blossom spots — a large urban lake completely ringed by cherry trees, with Lotte World Tower (Korea's tallest building and the world's sixth-tallest) looming dramatically in the background. The contrast between the delicate pink blossoms and the 555 m glass skyscraper is quintessentially modern Seoul. The full lake circuit (2 km) is walkable in 30 minutes and the reflections of blossoms on the water are exceptional. Entry is completely free and the area is accessible 24 hours.

Night visits to Seokchon Lake (after 8 PM, when Lotte World Tower's LED facade lights up) produce some of the most dramatic blossom photographs in Seoul — the pink blossoms against the illuminated tower are visually unique. The adjacent Lotte World complex, Jamsil Sports Stadium, and Olympic Park are all within walking distance, making this a great afternoon-into-evening destination.
5
UNESCO Heritage · Gyeongju Bomun Lake, Gyeongju
Gyeongju Cherry Blossoms — Bomun Lake & Gyeongju-daero 경주 벚꽃
경주시 보문동 · Bus or taxi from Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal or the city centre · Peak: early–mid April

Gyeongju (경주) — the 1,000-year-old capital of the Silla Kingdom — offers perhaps the most historically charged cherry blossom experience in Korea. The long Gyeongju-daero boulevard connecting the city to Bomun Lake (보문호) is lined with cherry trees that bloom in a continuous 10 km corridor of pink. Cycling this route during full bloom is unforgettable. Bomun Lake itself is encircled by blossoms with the calm water reflecting the trees and the traditional resort buildings beyond. The combination of ancient burial mounds (대릉원), Cheomseongdae observatory, and blossom-lined streets makes Gyeongju's spring entirely different from Seoul's urban blossom experience.

Rent a bicycle in the city centre — hire shops cluster around the Intercity Bus Terminal and the Daereungwon tumuli area (city bikes from ₩3,000/hr) — and cycle the 10 km blossom avenue to Bomun Lake at your own pace, one of the most pleasant spring rides in Korea. (Note that Gyeongju Station itself lies well outside the town centre.) Book Gyeongju accommodation 2–3 months in advance for early April dates, as the city fills completely during peak bloom.
6
Hidden Gem · Naksan Park, Seoul
Naksan Park Cherry Blossoms 낙산공원 벚꽃
종로구 낙산길 41 · Subway Line 4, Hyehwa station (Exit 2) · Free, open 24 hours

Naksan Park (낙산공원) sits on a low hill above the Daehangno (대학로) arts district and Ihwa Village (이화마을) — one of Seoul's most charming and often-overlooked blossom spots. The park follows the line of Seoul's old city wall (한양도성) on the hillside, and the cherry trees line the ancient stone wall's base, creating a combination of 600-year-old fortification and spring blossoms that's visually extraordinary and far less crowded than Yeouido or Seokchon Lake. The walk up through Ihwa Mural Village (이화벽화마을), with its famous cat murals and stairway garden, adds a neighbourhood exploration dimension.

Naksan is a genuine local spot — you'll see far more Korean families and couples than tour groups. The park is connected to the Seoul City Wall hiking trail, which can be followed east to Heunginjimun Gate or west toward Bugaksan. The view from the hilltop over the city with blossom foreground is excellent.
7
Special Experience · Jinhae Gyeonghwa Station Railway
Gyeonghwa Station Cherry Blossom Railway 경화역 벚꽃 철길
창원시 진해구 경화역길 · Walk from Jinhae city centre or taxi

Gyeonghwa Station (경화역) in Jinhae is one of Korea's most photographed and beloved cherry blossom spots — an active (but infrequent) single-track railway line flanked on both sides by a continuous tunnel of cherry trees, creating a corridor of white and pink that stretches as far as the eye can see. Visitors walk along the tracks (watching for the occasional train) and photograph the blossom tunnel. It's one of those rare spots where reality exceeds even the most impressive photographs. The station itself is a small, unmanned stop with an old-fashioned signboard and benches — charmingly simple.

The railway is technically active — trains run infrequently but do pass through the blossom tunnel. Stand to the side when you hear a train approaching; the staff position themselves along the track during festival season. The best photography light is in the morning (soft directional light through the blossoms from the east). This spot gets very crowded by 10 AM during the festival — arrive at dawn for empty tracks.

Practical Tips for Cherry Blossom Season

Accommodation — Book 3 Months Ahead Minimum Cherry blossom season (late March–mid April) is Korea's most popular travel period for both domestic and international visitors. Hotels in Seoul, Jinhae area (Changwon/Busan), and Gyeongju sell out months in advance. Prices increase 30–80% from off-season rates. Book as soon as the current year's forecast is published (typically January). Refundable bookings are worth the slightly higher rate given the date uncertainty.
Blossom duration is short — full bloom typically lasts only 7–10 days before petals fall. Plan to visit within the middle 3–5 days of full bloom for the best experience. The "petal rain" (꽃비) as blossoms fall is also beautiful but marks the end of peak season.
Best photography: early morning (7–9 AM) for empty streets and soft light; evening (after 6 PM) for city lights and illuminated spots like Seokchon Lake and Changgyeonggung. Overcast days produce softer, more even light that makes blossom colours pop more than harsh midday sun.

Mid-Range — Seoul Spring
Seoul Jongno / Yeouido Hotels

Central Seoul gives subway access to all major blossom spots (Yeouido, Changgyeonggung, Seokchon Lake, Naksan Park). Mid-range hotels from ₩100,000–180,000/night (prices elevated during blossom peak).

Luxury — Gyeongju Bomun Resort
Gyeongju Hilton / Commodore Hotel Gyeongju

The luxury resort hotels on Bomun Lake (보문호) in Gyeongju offer direct lake-view blossom access from private balconies — a truly special spring experience. Book 3–4 months ahead. From ₩200,000+ per night in blossom season.
